Events!
Here is a list of the event offerings this year for speech! Further VHSL-specific or WACFL-specific requirements for any of these events can be found at the following websites, respectively:

Original Oratory
Write and memorize a persuasive speech about any topic! Speech length may not be greater than 10 minutes.
Declamation
(Not a VHSL Event!)
Memorize and present a speech that has been delivered in real life. Speech lengths may not be greater than 10 minutes.
Impromptu
Draw a random topic from a set of topics given by the judges. Then, prepare and present a speech on the topic within 7 minutes.
Extemporaneous Speaking
Deliver a speech on any current events topic. Topics will be chosen by the judge of each round. Participants are given 30 minutes of prep time and 7 minutes of speaking time.
Storytelling
Memorize and present a children's story to the judges in under 10 minutes! Remember to use expressions!
Poetry and Prose
Usually grouped together (but separate for VHSL), participants memorize and recite a selection of poetry and prose. Both pieces must be under 10 minutes.
Dramatic Interpretation
Memorize and present a dramatic piece. The length of the piece must be under 10 minutes.
Humorous Interpretation
Memorize and present a humorous piece. The length of the piece must be under 10 minutes.
